people want things that have been created by hand. there is an integrity attached to hand printing as it shows the flaws. freehand printing shows even more of the artisan handprint. important aspects of my work are to create beautiful and practical items of good quality that are true to the quince aesthetic. there is much attention to detail. the methods of production are important with an emphasis on a low impact approach. it is a very simple, low tech procedure.
these are thoughtful objects that enrich our daily lives. the products are deceptively simple, streamlined and manufactured to last. there is an ethical approach with a unique quality and integrity.
my designs have a signature so it is easy for my clients to add to what they already have. many clients buy new pieces each year or every couple of months. in this way it is important to have a follow on signature. designs tend to develop organically over a great deal of time. i may have the seeds of an idea in my head or roughly drawn on a piece of paper. these are then stashed away in a cupboard in the workshop and may not be utilised for months. dare i say it, sometimes years have passed by and then i rediscover them!
the beauty of the retail space is that the workshop is an integral part. clients pop in as i am printing and so i guess they get a very real sense of the quince product in the making. i undertake alot of custom work for my clients and there is much colour matching for existing spaces. the retail space allows me to come into direct contact with my clients and to create a very satisfying solution to their needs. there is a strong focus on natural fabrics with linen, linen/cotton and egyptian cotton being utilised for most products.
when designing i like to reference different cultures - my partner is balinese - and i draw much inspiration from travel. there is a strong sense of history or nostalgia in my work which tells snippets of my story. lace design is a reworking of a beautiful tablecloth that my nanna painstakingly worked by hand. odah, which translates as grandma in balinese pays tribute to my son's balinese grandma. birdie, i have been a mad keen twitcher (birdwatcher) since my primary school days.
my background:
i studied the following -
fine art printmaking on paper
advertising/graphic design
chef (wanted to be a food stylist for the magazine and book industry)
surface printing and design
all of the above are visual pursuits and therefore i can utilise the various skills learnt over many years to pull it all together in a satisfying way in the retail space.
i am always striving to make my client's experience a very enriching one. a little business like quince relies heavily on the connectivity of like-minded individuals, making word of mouth very important.
